iCAN® is a cloud-based, formative assessment tool that links evidence of learners' progress towards proficiency to standards-based learning objectives in a way that informs and empowers personalized learning.

iCAN is currently used in World Language and English Language Learning (ELL) programs, and can support any set of standards ranging from the Common Core to professional certification. Teachers select the appropriate set of standards within iCAN and choose targeted learning statements and tasks that they want their students to accomplish along a learning pathway. Personalized learning pathways are developed through teacher-student collaboration, and can be customized for an individual student, by group, or for an entire class.

Students of all ages use iCAN to demonstrate learning and progress towards proficiency by providing digital evidence (including text, images, audio and/or video) for each task. Continuous teacher feedback, along with parent/mentor review through a separate portal, creates a partnership that reinforces students’ ownership of, and responsibility for, their own learning.

With iCAN:

• Students self-assess, set goals and respond to instruction by focusing on understandable, actionable learning tasks while building a growing portfolio of digital evidence of progress towards proficiency.
• Teachers continuously monitor and evaluate progress towards proficiency, guide students with formative feedback, and use each learner’s individual portfolio to build meaningful connections to their learning interests and objectives.
• Parents and mentors participate in their student’s learning path with access to their student’s tasks and portfolios. 
• Credentialing agencies and employers use evidence from the portfolios along with summative assessments to consider learner readiness for graduation or work.

iCAN currently includes ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, Texas ELP Standards, Florida World Languages Standards and WIDA™ CAN DO Descriptors, with more to come. Alignment to the Common Core is a current initiative.
