Twi is a dialect of the Akan language, which originates from Ghana in West Africa and is the principal native language of the Akan people. It is widely spoken across the southern and central regions of Ghana, including the Ashanti, Central, Eastern, Brong-Ahafo, and parts of the Volta regions. Akan (including Twi) belongs to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family and has several dialects, with Asante Twi being the most prominent.

In the United States, Twi is most commonly spoken within Ghanaian immigrant communities. While specific cities or regions are not always publicly detailed, Twi speakers can be found in areas with significant Ghanaian populations, such as metropolitan areas in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. Universities like Indiana University, Ohio State, Michigan State, and others offer Twi language courses, reflecting its presence in academic and Ghanaian-American communities.
