Avant Score Review Process Policy and Procedures:

Avant’s skilled raters work together with cutting-edge technology to ensure accurate ratings and maintain the highest levels of interrater reliability among its raters. For more information about this process, please read this report: Reliability and Accuracy of Ratings in the Writing and Speaking Sections of STAMP Tests.

Additionally, Avant makes the scoring rubric publicly available along with written exemplars for each proficiency level.

In order to request a score review, follow the steps below:

1. Fill out this form for each score review request.

2. Click Submit and the form will be sent to Karl Bowman, Dual Language Immersion & World Languages Specialist at the Utah State Board of Education.

3. Upon written receipt of the approved score review requests from Mr. Bowman, Avant will proceed with the score review.

4. Results of the score review will be sent to the requester at the district and Karl Bowman at the USBE, within 21 business days.

Avant cannot begin the score review process without the written approval of the USBE.

Please note:

  • Avant will not complete a review unless approved by the USBE.
  • Avant will only complete a review for the final score/level not individual writing or speaking responses. The final score of each skill is determined by the two highest scores from the 3 student responses.
  • Test Administration Violations (TAV) scores with high rater confidence or substantiated evidence of agreement violations will NOT be reviewed. For more information about TAV scores, please review the following details: TAV Scores (found on the Benchmarks and Rubrics page)
  • The findings of the review are final and cannot be challenged.
  • The score review process may take up to 21 business days to complete.

A request form must be completed for each test taker that you would like Avant to review. The review process will not begin until Avant has received a completed form.

Avant does not have embedded speech-to-text within their secure testing system for the STAMP writing section. If a student cannot type into the system, and requires speech-to-text, the student will need to use two devices to complete the writing portion of the STAMP test. If a student needs to use paper for handwriting or a scribe, the LEA will need to supply the student with the paper.  Students using speech-to-text accommodation need to test individually so they do not disturb other students.

The LEA will send the following to Jessica Wilhelm (Jessica.wilhelm@schools.utah.gov), Special education Specialist at Utah State Board of Education:

  • Student SSID
  • Language of the test

Once the information is received, the Avant team will roster the student(s) and create test codes.

If the test code needs to be sent to an alternate testing location than the current one assigned to the SSID, please include that information.

  1. Avant rosters the student to a different test code for the writing section.
  2. Avant shares the test code and password with the teacher through the Dropbox folder.
  3. Proctor follows directions in the STAMP Handwritten Writing Section Guide to print out students’ writing prompts and save the PDF. There is information on these printouts that Avant needs to upload the student PDF responses. Please note this link does refer to “Handwritten” but a saved PDF of the student’s writing section using speech-to-text or a scribe can also be submitted.

One 3-page PDF with the printed writing prompts from the Avant platform, and one 3-page PDF with the student writing answers should be submitted to Avant

  1. Proctor helps students use speech-to-text on a second device or student dictates responses to a scribe to respond to the writing prompt outside of the test and saves the responses as another PDF.
  2. Proctor submits both PDFs to Avant using Dropbox Link.

Please note: Responses to all prompts (2 for Se tests, 3 for S tests) need to be submitted with their corresponding QR codes. Only one document per PDF can be submitted.
